With the beginning of the school year brings the beginning of a whole new set of after school activities such as soccer, and scouts. Our girls have been in scouting for a few years now, but last year was the beginning of our Boy Scout adventure. My son got to hold a large snake at the initial meeting and from there he was hooked.
This year scouts started off with a bang again. Like last year, it starts right after soccer practice, and on this first week he seemed to be ready to skip. He even said he didn't feel well. The first meeting was going to be a demonstration from the Morning Calm Martial Arts School which I was pretty sure he would not want to miss.
I was right! The reminder of the night's activity caused him to rethink skipping, and he had a really good time. In addition to watching the students from the school put on their presentation, the scouts also got to participate. They brought training bags and let the scouts kick into them as the martial arts students held the bags. In Taekwondo after you make your move you do a yell, called a Ki Hup (pronounced 'Key - up'). This was a favorite of the boys as well.
The parents were not left out of the night's events. After the boys had all had an opportunity to kick the bags and get in their blood-curdling Ki Hups the parents were invited to take their turn. I was feeling a bit too overconfident as I had taken lessons for a year or more when my wife and I were dating. My Ki Hup was impressive, and my form was ok, but my kick did little to instill fear in the student (an adult) holding the bag for me. It was a fun night though, and pardon the pun, a fun way to 'kick off' another year of scouting.
